The idea of timing cleansing and detox practices with the lunar cycle is not a modern wellness trend. It is a tradition rooted in naturopathic medicine, Ayurveda, and traditional European herbalism that practitioners have followed for centuries. As a naturopath and colon hydrotherapist, I find it a useful framework for clients who want to work with the body’s natural rhythms rather than against them — and the full moon is consistently the time I see the best results from cleansing treatments.
What Happens at the Full Moon
The full moon represents the peak of the lunar cycle — the moment of maximum gravitational pull and the point at which the cycle begins its waning, releasing phase. Traditional medicine systems across cultures have long associated this period with heightened physiological activity. The body retains more fluid, sleep can be more disrupted, and the lymphatic and digestive systems tend to be more active.
From a naturopathic perspective, this heightened activity makes the days immediately following the full moon an ideal window for cleansing. The body is already primed to release — supporting that process with colonic hydrotherapy, dietary changes, or a structured detox programme works with that momentum rather than trying to initiate cleansing from a standing start.
Full Moon Detox — What I Recommend
In my practice I notice consistent patterns around the full moon. Clients who book colonics in the three to four days following the full moon often report stronger results — better release, clearer energy afterwards, and a more noticeable shift in how they feel. This is not coincidence, and it is not placebo. The body has rhythms, and working with them is simply good naturopathic practice.
For a full moon detox I typically recommend:
Colonic hydrotherapy — the most effective way to support deep colon cleansing in this window. The three to four days following the full moon are the ideal time to book, particularly for clients who already have a regular colonic programme.
Dietary support — reduce or eliminate meat, alcohol, refined sugar, and processed foods in the days around the full moon. Focus on easily digestible plant foods, broths, and plenty of water. This reduces the burden on the digestive system and supports the body’s natural detox processes.
Herbal support — specific herbs support liver and bowel function during a cleanse. I advise clients individually on which herbs are appropriate for their constitution and health history.
Rest and reduced stimulation — the full moon period tends to bring heightened sensitivity. Supporting the nervous system with good sleep, reduced screen time, and quiet time outdoors supports the overall cleansing process.
Spring and Autumn — The Best Seasonal Windows
Within the lunar calendar, the full moons of spring and autumn traditionally mark the most powerful cleansing periods. Spring corresponds to the body’s natural renewal after winter — lighter days, warming temperatures, and a natural shift toward lighter foods. Autumn corresponds to the preparation period before winter — clearing accumulated summer excess and strengthening the immune system before the colder months.
If you are considering your first colonic or a more structured detox programme, booking around a spring or autumn full moon is an excellent starting point.
A Note on Detox and Health Claims
Naturopathic approaches to cleansing are complementary to — not a replacement for — conventional medical care. If you have an existing health condition, are pregnant, or are taking medication, please consult your GP before beginning any cleansing programme. For a factual overview of what detox means from a clinical perspective, the NHS has published guidance on the evidence around detox diets that is worth reading alongside any holistic approach.

Wonderful page! Great you are helping people over come issues. And teaching about detoxing.
With holding toxins is horrible.
I agree, any type of cleanse or detox that helps release toxins, and waste accumulated, is good. I have not gotten a colonic yet. Divorced mom with two kids. So don’t have the funds to get colonics now. But will in the future.
Few days after a full moon I get cleansing enemas. Feel so good after the enemas.
I give my two kids enemas during this time as well.
So others can learn and know, I get an enema using the rubber bag. And my two are given a bulb syringe enema.
Bless you.
Thanks for this page.
Pray many read it and learn.
Good blog. Great information in all of the blogs.
Carol, I believe, from what have read and been told, during the full moon cycle best to give enemas the day before, during and day after the cycle is complete.
I get a colonic often. Do coffee enemas often.
I also use the red rubber 2-quart enema bag. Some say leaching is a problem using the red bag.
I have found nothing that states for certain this happens.
The red bag is used in many homes. It was used in our home growing up.
I give enemas, but not coffee enemas, to my two children. Administered with a rubber enema bulb syringe.
Best to consult with your doctor before giving or getting enemas in the home.
