Garlic has been used for thousands of years as both food and medicine — and for good reason. The gut health benefits of garlic are well documented, from its antimicrobial and antifungal properties to its role in supporting a balanced digestive environment. As a naturopath and colon hydrotherapist, I have worked with garlic therapeutically for over 25 years, and it remains one of the most powerful natural tools in my practice. This article explores why garlic deserves a place in any serious approach to digestive health — and why it features in one of my most requested treatments.
The main active ingredient in crushed garlic is Allicin. It stems from the Lilliacea family of plants, and is rich in sulphur compounds. Sulphur is what helps the cardiovascular and nervous system and the brain. Try and eat a sulphur food every day. Other sulphur containing foods are:
- Cabbage
- Spinach
- Turnips
- Carrots
- Radish
- Chicory
- Leeks
- Egg yolk
- Nuts
- Fish
- Beans
- Lean meat
- Red pepper (Spicy)
These food are also good sources of Vit B1, Thiamine and Biotin.
I stayed a few days near a sulphur rich hot spring in Sarasota, Florida. The smell was strong and unpleasant, but people travelled from all over the world to go in to the hot sulphur rich waters. Pains and aches disappeared. Skin rejuvenated. Carers wheeled sick patients into the lakes in their wheel-chairs,so they too could improve their ailing conditions. It was an amazing thing to see. Nearby you could buy the sulphur rich waters as a medicine. To drink diluted.
Garlic gut health
Garlic has been around for such a long time and has been used though the centuries to heal a myriad of diseases. The Egyptians used it in their embalming rituals. It was given to workers to give them more strength and stamina to make the great pyramids. Many of the ancient visionaries, like Hippocrates and Paracelsus believed in the vibration of plants, enhanced by the sun and moon, and that their radiant energy brings about the change in negative health conditions. Without the side effect that current medications bring about.
Garlic contains allicin, a sulphur compound recognised for its antimicrobial properties which can help with gut health — learn more at the BBC Good Food Guide to garlic or consult your GP for personalised advice.
I used to drink one clove of raw garlic every morning, when my kids where little, chopped up in boiled water, for a while to reduce asthma symptoms. Always followed by eating few sprigs of fresh parsley to reduce the odour. Note; never have more than 2 cloves of raw garlic daily as then it can contribute to anaemia.
Cooked garlic has no limit and you can learn all about garlic’s gut health benefits. I am noticing a lot of benefits experienced by my clients, with diluted garlic juice given as an enema at the end of a colonic. They love it and will always ask for it again when re-booking. It is a powerful germicide, anti-parasitic and anti-candida as well as an immune enhancer. It is also a nerve tonic and that may explain the benefits when used as an enema as it works on the old fermented matter held back by spasms and gas..clearing putrefaction.
We could go on and on to explicate about Garlic as its virtues are many. It is truly ‘the King of Herbs’!
