Turmeric has been used in traditional medicine for centuries — and for good reason. Its active compound, curcumin, has well-documented anti-inflammatory properties that support digestive health, ease mucous congestion, and help the body manage pain and discomfort. Combined with fresh ginger, which supports gut motility and reduces nausea, this turmeric latte is one of the most effective warming drinks you can make at home to support your gut health year-round.
I have been making this turmeric latte for years and recommend it regularly to clients at Phenomenal Colonics, particularly during the colder months when the immune system and digestive system both benefit from additional support. It is simple, warming, and genuinely delicious.
Turmeric Latte Gut Health Benefits — Why It Works
The gut health benefits of turmeric come primarily from curcumin, which research suggests may help reduce intestinal inflammation, support the liver, and encourage healthy bile flow. Ginger complements this by stimulating digestive enzymes and supporting gut motility — the muscular movement that keeps food moving through the digestive tract efficiently.
Almond milk provides a gentle, dairy-free base that suits most digestive systems, including those with lactose sensitivity. Cinnamon adds a natural sweetness and helps regulate blood sugar, making this a far better choice than a conventional hot drink mid-afternoon.

Marijke’s Turmeric Curcuma Latte Recipe
Serves 1 — preparation time 15 minutes
Ingredients:
- A generous slice of fresh ginger, cut into pieces (or 1 tsp powdered organic ginger)
- A piece of fresh Peruvian turmeric, cut into pieces (or 1 tsp powdered organic turmeric)
- 1 large cup of unsweetened almond milk
- 1 tsp honey or date syrup (optional — almond milk has a natural sweetness)
- A pinch of cinnamon to finish
Method:
- Add the ginger and turmeric to the almond milk in a small saucepan
- Bring to the boil, then reduce the heat and simmer for 10 to 15 minutes
- Add honey or date syrup if using and stir well
- Pour through a sieve into your favourite mug
- Sprinkle cinnamon on top and enjoy immediately
Fresh turmeric and ginger are preferable where available — the flavour is notably more vibrant. If using powdered herbs, choose certified organic wherever possible.
When to Drink It
This turmeric latte works well at any time of day. I particularly recommend it in the evening — the warming, anti-inflammatory combination of turmeric and ginger supports relaxation and aids sleep, making it an excellent alternative to caffeine after midday. It is also a comforting choice during or after illness, when the digestive system needs gentle, supportive nourishment rather than stimulation.
Supporting Your Gut Health Further
Diet plays a central role in digestive health, but sometimes the gut needs more targeted support. Colonic hydrotherapy works alongside dietary changes to support deeper cleansing of the colon and to restore digestive balance. If you are experiencing persistent bloating, constipation, or digestive discomfort, a colonic consultation with Marijke may be a helpful next step.
